The 2019 racketball tournament will start at the beginning of January (or, to be pedantic, because of the way the calendar falls, on Monday 31 December). As usual, the first stage will be a round robin to determine who should got through to the finals. To decide whether to set up a single round robin, with the top eight going through to the finals, as in 2017 or two round robins with the top four in each going through to division one and division two finals, as this year, I need to know how many players wish to take part.
Everyone who is in the present league and has played at least one match is eligible to enter the tournament as is any player who has not been in the current league, provided I have or can acquire the data needed to set his handicap. But the tournament is organised on the assumption that everyone who enters intends to play all their matches, so I would suggest that a players only enters if he believes that he will be able to play an average of about three matches per fortnight. I will also set up a non-tournament box if there are at least four members who let me know that they do not expect to be able to play the number of matches expected of competitors in the tournament but do not want to be entirely deprived of league matches whilst the tournament is going on.
As an indication of possible dates, for the finals avoid a clashing with Easter, the round robin stage will have to end no later than 7 April, so that the finals can be played no later than 14 April. There will be an earlier end date if there are two separate divisions or if there are significantly fewer players in the tournament than the number of players in the current league.
The round robin will also function as a normal league and (together with the non tournament box if there is one) will be used to determine who will be in each of box of the normal three box league that will follow start after the tournament finals have been played, so there is no objection to a player entering the tournament even if he doubts whether he will be available for the finals.
N.B. Please let me know as soon as possible and at latest by Christmas if you would like to take part in the tournament and, if you do not, whether you would like to join the non-tournament box. Given the uncertainties of this Spring, in particular Brexit, preparations for which may keep some of you chained to your desks, I need to hear from you and will not be entering anyone by default simply because they have played in the current league.
This note is going to everyone who played in last years tournament as well as to all members of the current league in the hope that some lost sheep will return.
