Congratulations to Paul Lindsay, Christopher Saunders and Christopher Hayes, who won their respective leagues. All except Paul are rewarded by a change in their handicaps. As regards the next leagues, the good news is that in early December Bradley Sawyer will be back at the end of his first term at Cambridge and has asked to play in them and that Joanna Wynne is joining them for the first time. Joanna is new to racketball but plays squash and will, I think, adapt quickly, particularly if we all make sure that she gets plenty of games. The bad news is that Nick David has told me that he is hanging up his racket. We have lost both a player in our leagues and an inspiration to those of us (myself in particular) who would regard it as a compliment to be described as middle aged. These leagues have now been posted. As you will see, I have reverted to two leagues. This is to give everyone a wider choice of opponents in the run up to 2017 racketball tournament and to give me a better chance to reassess the handicaps before it begins. Some handicaps have been changed, so check the list before you play. These leagues will run until the end of the year, both because they are bigger than usual and because many players may not be available to play during the Christmas period. The 2017 tournament will start on 1/1/2017 and will begin as usual with a round robin, i.e. a single league. The top eight players at the end of the round robin will be eligible for the finals, which will, as last year, be played on a knock out basis in a single afternoon. The detailed rules for the knock out will be similar to those that applied last year but with some detailed adaptations to take account of the results of a questionnaire that I sent to all the participants in the last year’s finals. The finals themselves will take place pm a Sunday afternoon one week after the end of the round robin. I will set the dates for the end of the round robin and the finals when I know how many participants there will be. I should stress that entry into the round robin is not restricted to players who expect to be available for the finals, because it will also serve as the basis for establishing the normal leagues that will follow it.
